There’s no need to be fearful when you hear our dentist say the words “root canal.” Even though root canals have a scary reputation, the truth is that the pain comes from the infection itself and not from the treatment. Our 01887 root canals at Sevak Abrahamian, DDS, LLC are designed to make you as comfortable as possible during the involved process, which typically requires more than one visit to complete. In the end, however, you will be rid of your pain and have likely saved your natural tooth. All in all, a pretty good deal.
Our 01887 root canals are usually the last chance left to save your tooth before it would have to be extracted. What’s the difference? Well, for one thing you won’t have a space where a tooth used to be. If it’s a front tooth, this is a cosmetic drawback. And if it’s a back tooth, it can have a negative impact on your ability to chew. Furthermore, when teeth are missing, the remaining ones on that jaw can start to shift. This may result in discomfort and your occlusion (or bite) becoming misaligned. Yes, we can do a restoration such as a bridge or a dental implant. But that involves time and expense. And it’s still not the same as keeping your tooth.
You’ll start off by getting a local anesthetic to numb you beforehand. Our 01887 root canals involve drilling from the top of the tooth to eventually gain access to the pulp chamber at the bottom of the tooth, near the root. Once there, our dentist will remove the injured pulp, the nerve, and clean out any debris that is there. In between sessions, a temporary crown will be placed on top of the tooth to protect it from contamination. After the work is done, the tooth will be sealed. You will then be measured for a permanent crown which will be made at the dental lab and then fitted to you and cemented into place. Root canals have a high success rate of about 90%, so you can feel confident that the chances of saving your tooth in most cases is very good.
